John Marshall
August 09, 1949 - January 11, 2013

John M. Marshall of Walled Lake was born on August 9, 1949 in Pontiac, Michigan to Kenneth and Mary (nee: Sherman) Marshal. He died January 11, 2013 at age 63.

John is the beloved husband of 25 years to Diane. Loving father of Jennifer (Dan) Lesnek, Stephanie (Chris) Charrette, Bradley (Melissa) Dunn and Jennifer (Andrew) Garner. Grandfather of Anthony, Christian, Devon, Alec, Bailey, Zachary, Lillian, Gabriel, Benjamin, Kailee, Alayna, and Mia. Great grandfather of Bentley. Dear brother of Hank (Jane) Bourdo, Wanda (Gary) Rieman, Phil (Charlene) Marshall, Punki (Dave) Lindsay, Bob (Cheryl) Marshall, Ricky Marshall,  Bev Whittenburg, John (Carol) Koivu. and the late Gary Marshall. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

John was a lifelong resident of Walled Lake and graduated from Walled Lake High School class of 1967. Upon graduation he was “invited” to join the US Army. Upon his return in 1971, he met Ralph Goddard and went to work for him as an insurance agent sales representative in Walled Lake. Current partners Jon Retherford and Tom Bingham joined him around 1981 buying out Goddard and merging Goddard/Talbot/Mays Agency to become owners of the Goddard-Talmay Insurance Agency of today.

The Goddard Agency was one of the founding members of the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and John was selected to represent the firm at chamber events. He served on the chamber board from 1978 until 2001 including as president from 1985 to 1986.

John also received from the Walled Lake Area Jaycees the “Young Man of the Year” award. The Jaycees (the Junior Chamber of Commerce) helped prepare John for public speaking and performing public service activities.

In addition he joined Rotary International with the Walled Lake Rotarians (now the Lakes Area Rotary Club) in service to the local and global community. He actively participated in Rotary functions from 1978 to 2002 serving as president between 1982 and 1983. He was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest honor in 1985 and again in 2012. He was instrumental in implementing one of the largest multi-year golf outings in the area, the Emery Jacques memorial, which funded many Walled Lake School Scholarships. John was also honored to be named Outstanding Citizen of the Year for Commerce Township in 2012.

John served on the Planning Commission for the Village of Wolverine Lake. His keen mind for leadership and organizational abilities were vital to the success of fundraising events for the community. He served on the first Foundation for Excellence for Walled Lake Schools board and worked as a founding member of the Walled Lake Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and it’s Main Street Program.

John is credited with helping bring the extension of Maple Road in Walled Lake to fruition. In 1986, he teamed up with other community members securing federal funding for the extension. During the next four years the group worked with the federal government to secure the $4 million in government funding for the project. John also helped form the Walled Lake DDA which was necessary to secure a $2.5 million bond in part of the city’s commitment to the Maple Extension project.

John had the talent of instilling trust and confidence with his business clients while maintaining a large diverse social network of family and friends. Among the phrases we enjoyed hearing from John (that we could put in print )and will miss were “As a practical matter,” “In my opinion,” “I can fly higher and dive deeper, run faster...,” and “Pal.” He will be dearly missed by all.
